Our Story
Brought Back By Students, For Students
The purpose of The Roar Report is to enhance LGCA’s school community, create opportunities for people to develop their literary abilities and to provide a way for students of LGCA to publish their work.
A Word From The Editors-In Chief
Dear Readers,
Thank you so much for all the support and excitement surrounding Issue 1! We are proud to publish Issue 2, with many thanks to our whole team. We would like to personally thank Jamie Laurenson and Presley Mitchell for their wonderful article on the infamous Cola Wars, Lilah Scheewe and Scarlet Claasens for their detailed book recommendations, and Mrs. McCullough for her continuous support.
If you are interested in publishing an art project or piece of writing, we have added a “Student Showcase” section for Issue 2, and we would love to have your work featured! Please contact RoarReportTeam@lgca.ca in regards to queries or submissions for that.
Lauren Ko and Joanné Scherman
Co-Founders and Editors-In-Chief
Issue 2
Meet Our Team!
Lauren Ko - Co-Founder
Lauren is one of the founders of The Roar Report, and a very talented individual. She loves to read, paint, and play instruments. She is extremely clever and kind. Her favourite color is light or dark blue, but as she said herself, “not that cyan blue, you know?” Lauren has worn glasses for 4 years because she’s basically blind. If she were an animal, she would want to be a fox or an owl since they’re pretty cool and nocturnal. I think that Lauren is a clever student, and you should definitely read all of her articles.
Joanné Scherman - Co-Founder
Joanné is a very indecisive person. It is questionable how she even got this newspaper up and running, although she had Lauren to keep her sane. This is her 17th draft of her description, and even now she cannot choose what to say, so I'm writing it for her. Out of school, she is very busy with her lifesaving sport (of which she's already competed at a inter-provincial level), her dog, and her countless service "jobs". Over the summer, she went slightly crazy, and has already gotten over 100 service hours. This is due to her imaginary competition with Lauren, which she somehow believes always has more than her. (Note: "She always does!" -Joanné) In short, Joanné loves volunteering at her church, lifesaving sport (which is a real sport, look it up), joining too many clubs for the little time she has, re-doing her work a million times and yapping for hours in computer class.
Claire Tippett - Head of HR, Columnist
Claire joined LGCA in 6th grade and was ahead of everyone else already. She’s a really kind, caring and humorous person who is always willing to help when you need it. She loves to read, especially classics, which has let her writing ability shine. She loves hanging out with people and has a really strong community in her church and youth group. Outside of excelling at school she loves to dance and does competitive contemporary as well as lyrical and ballet, she has not only a love for dance but as well as a love for swimming. When she’s not studying, doing homework or being active, you can find her doing some really cute (pinterest approved!) crafts.
Lilah Scheewe - Columnist
Lilah is a friendly, outgoing and kind person who’s a LGCA lifer (has been attending LGCA since kindergarten). She’s an extreme bookworm. Her favorite genres are fantasy, adventure, mystery and romance but don’t get her started on any book series, she’ll literally rant for hours. When she’s not buried in a book, you can find Lilah in the kitchen baking! She’s even made her brother's wedding cake! She has two older sisters, an older brother, and a playful dog, Rocky. Lilah’s older sister Kaitlyn was in the newspaper club during her time at LGCA and now Lilah is following in her footsteps (A legacy). Lilah loves to play volleyball and has played as a middle on the senior girls team since 9th grade. Faith-wise, she attends North Shore Alliance Church and youth group, also going to Anvil Island Daybreak camp every summer.
Scarlet Claasens - Columnist
Scarlet has always had a passion for reading, writing, and the arts. From a young age, you would have to rip her away from a book to get her back on earth. Besides having a creative mind, she is a caring and empathetic friend to friends and strangers. She joined the newspaper to give us a peek inside her creative mind and her warm heart. She loves English class, and writing empowers her to share her thoughts.
Gloria Jung - Columnist
Gloria has always been hardworking, caring, and kind. She loves helping others learn and grow and never lets people down. She joined the newspaper to share knowledge with others and because english is her favourite subject. She loves researching and writing essays, and still manages to do amazing in volleyball. Gloria loves her friends, family, volleyball, and her dog Hazel. She also has a weirdly impressive talent of being able to make the best brownies that anyone has ever had. She wants to help people when she graduates by becoming a vet, and taking care of animals like her beloved Hazel.
Mikayla Mudzengi - Head Of Marketing, Columnist
Mikayla is known to be too fun and outgoing. She has no fear of making new friends, and can easily defuse tense situations with her humour. She’s also a hard worker and makes a point to turn her assignments in on time. Her contribution to the newspaper consists of being a writer and sometimes a poster maker. Her articles are structured and thought out, and her posters are bright and creative. At home, she has a younger sister. In South Africa, she has two dogs; Theo and Theodora.
Caleb Russell - Photographer
Caleb is a well-rounded person and a great friend. He is knowledgeable despite having dyslexia, excels at working in a group despite being a quiet and introverted person, and is loyal and kind. I wouldn't call him a leader, but still, he is a great team player, and he doesn't give up; he works hard, and honestly, he cares about his friends and peers. He always does the right thing and doesn't cave to pressure, which is what makes Caleb, Caleb.
Arielle Uy - Columnist
Arielle is a dancer who does all types of dancing, including jazz, contemporary, hip hop, ballet and much more. Outside of dance and school, she crochets many things, including tiny hats. The only reason she’s in the newspaper is to eat food and hang out with her friends. She really doesn’t like sports and has never taken a PE class in her life (lucky!). If she were an animal, she would be a dog, since she wants to be loved. She doesn’t write too many articles, as she prefers editing, but she hopes you like the ones she writes.
Ella Lambkin - Columnist
Ella is a Grade 9 student with a knack for turning everyday life into hilarious comics for the LGCA Newsfeed. She loves Roblox, watching movie marathons (anything from Hunger Games to Epic Adventures), and getting lost in a good book. She's a very avid reader. Her creative streak doesn't stop there; she's also a collage fanatic, with her locker covered from top to bottom in designs, photos, and inspiration. When she's not designing comics or reading, she's spending time with her dog Winnie. Ella is excited to share her creativity with the newspaper club and hopes her work leaves everyone laughing.
Ayden Conway - Columnist
Ayden has been in LGCA since Kindergarten. He has a great work ethic, and has made multiple creative writing pieces. He also enjoys skiing, traveling, and spending time with his dog and sister. He joined yearbook club to improve his writing skills as it is something he has always enjoyed.
Oliver Buhler - Photographer
Oliver is a kind and caring person who loves Yoshi. He is a bit shy but can be funny. He likes to write and draw, and he is a great photographer. He is so good and taking pictures that he is taking photos for the school yearbook. He is also a part of a great council, the best council, the student council of Lions Gate Christian Academy.
Reimi Chen - Columnist
Reimi is someone who loves almost everything. Maybe it’s because she was born on Valentine’s Day. She always makes an effort to make everyone feel happy, and if you see her in the hallways, she’ll try her best to smile at everyone or at least say hi. If there’s one thing Reimi loves, it's MUSIC. Reimi is obsessed with going to concerts, sometimes flying back to her hometown LA to see her favorite artists. She also likes to dance, play with her dog Olaf and travel. Her friends say that Reimi is an interesting little soul. “She talks about hotpot really often” says Mikayla, and from Isabella “sometimes she skips around in the hallway, and randomly decides her locker needs a makeover”.
Mariia Kurganova - Illustrator
Mariia loves to draw and hopes that she can add some art and imagination to the school newspaper. She wants to actively participate in the creation of illustrations and contribute to creative design of materials in the future.
Claire Dallimore - Columnist
Claire is a very interesting individual. With two energetic dogs, her love for climbing and an even more energetic brother, she’s very busy. She joined newspaper due to her love of writing, although she claims “I’m not that good”. In her free time, she goes to youth, which she dragged Joanné along to, bakes and enjoys painting.
Daniel Austin - Columnist
Daniel is a hardworking individual who cares deeply about those around him. He is a positive light to everyone, and always is smiling and tries to uplift others. He doesn’t care about being judged and knows only God can do so. His favourite colour is blue, his favourite TV show is Brooklyn 99, and his favorite sport is basketball. Daniel has a lot of self-love and tries to show everybody why they should love themselves, too. Daniel is a very unique person, and most of all, he is very, very… handsome. (Editor’s note: Daniel wrote this himself.)
