Can a Video Game Cure Burnout?

It was found by the Pew Research Center that about 26% of adults view video games as a waste of time. It may seem a lot considering the fact that in early 2026, almost 40% to 45% of the global population plays video games. Playing video games is described by people as the best way to relax and get rid of the daily worries of life. The question arises whether a video game can be used as a treatment for burnout.

Playing video games is a form of escape from stress, as it distracts the person and allows them to take a break from reality. Players are engaged in entertaining worlds where they pay attention to something more pleasant. The occasional use of video games may provide a brief respite and increase a person’s mood. Taking this mental diversion makes it possible to go back to one’s obligations with more vigor and clarity. Some video games have small, but regular, rewards which motivate people and encourage feelings of success. Success within the game will restore confidence and self-esteem when dealing with everyday problems seems too difficult to conquer.

Finally, video games alone cannot help with burnout; however, they can become a very useful tool for relaxing, having fun, and achieving something. In small portions, they will help with the recovery process. Nonetheless, the best solution for overcoming burnout would be to actually make some pauses. It can be done via playing video games, or walking outdoors, or listening to music, resting, or swimming, etc. In any case, one should make sure that he or she stays away from those things that can cause stress: socializing in a group of people or being completely isolated from them.
