Christmas is coming! And it's a great time to hang out with friends and family, to eat good food, and to get presents. However, it’s important to remember why we are celebrating. As we near Christmas, let’s take a moment to think about the baby who was born 2000 years ago in Bethlehem. Today we’re going to look at some of the names of Jesus that were prophesied in the old testament.

“For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

- Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

Let’s take a look at these names of Jesus one by one:

  • Wonderful Counselor

This very first title given to Jesus presents him as a guide. The Hebrew word, “Pele”, is translated as wonderful means something awe-inducing otherworldly, a doer of miracles. The name Wonderful Counselor tells us that Jesus is the ultimate and awe-inspiring mentor.

  • Mighty God

This title given to Jesus  implies that he is actually God. Not an easy concept to grasp. The Hebrew word “Gibbor” is translated as mighty here. It means mighty as in a war hero and could be translated as champion or even warrior. Our mighty God, Jesus, is our champion in war.

  • Everlasting Father

Not only is Jesus God, he is everlasting, but he’s also human? This is really hard to understand - actually it’s impossible to understand fully, but that’s okay. As humans, we are not meant to understand everything; it's enough to know that God is infinite, all powerful and for us.

  • Prince of Peace

Jesus being the Prince of Peace doesn’t mean we wouldn’t have trouble if we are in Him, we will, that’s not what this is talking about. The word “Shalom" here means internal peace. Remember peace doesn’t necessarily mean easy, but Jesus gives us internal peace despite any circumstance.

Going into this Christmas season I challenge you to reflect on these names of Jesus. Here are a few ideas of way to reflect and respond:

  1. Choose the name that resonates with you most, do an art piece that has the same idea. You could even make it into an ornament for your Christmas tree.

  2. Write a poem or song about one of these names.

  3. Do some research on another name of Jesus, for example you could look at what the name Emmanuel means or even the name Jesus.

These are just some ideas, but I hope they help you to start reflecting on Jesus, the reason for the season.
